ALBUM REVIEW : The Used take listeners on an rollercoaster of emotion with new album; ‘Toxic Positivity’

Toxic Positivity is the next studio album from The Used and is sure to take fans on a lyrical rollercoaster with 11 hard-hitting, emotion filled tracks.

‘Raw, unfiltered talent poured out song after song’ – Rusty Morgan

This album begins with ‘Worst I’ve Ever Been’.  Energetic riffs and catchy lyrics offers a peak into The Used’s current sound. This style blends electronic with intense riffs, breakdowns, and catchy recitations of lyrics. The track speaks volumes to the hopeless who face a fiercely harsh world that seems destined for destruction. –“nobody can stop this wicked world from burning”

‘Numb’ is a full showcase of questioning ones self and emotional detachment with the lyrics “does anyone else feel numb?
“My mind is locked away, where there ain’t no escapeI feel numb (numb)Does anybody else feel numb”

I Hate Everybody’ a lot of us will can absolutely relate. However, we must not interpret these instances such as song title or negativity as detracting from the quality and meaningfulness of this album. Sometimes we all require something that empathizes with us, and with this particular album it will be very easy to fulfill that need for many individuals.

‘Pinky Swear’ echos as the cry for help, with the next track ‘Headspace’ representing moments of clarity. ‘Cherry’ is probably the most catchy on the album. It signifies acceptance while Dopamine’ has a delinquent yet fun vibe. The emo vibe continues with ‘Dancing with a Brick Wall’, which showcases how emo music has evolved to incorporate various sounds taken from other genres and a bigger scope of vocal ranges.

‘House of Sand’ gives hope through its poetic melody, but the lyrics paint a picture of something much different. The album concludes with ‘Giving Up,’ which has an upbeat tempo but is accompanied by heavy, burdensome lyrics. It’s safe to say Bert McCracken wears his heart on his sleeve through the this entire album, making this one of The Used’s most sincere albums to date.
